Oct 9 As if having to be at a mall on a Sunday afternoon wasn’t hellish enough, Thing 1 and I went to Macy’s to find her shoes for my sister’s wedding. The carnage in the shoe department was shocking. Apparently there was some sort of sale going on, and there were shoes tossed in piles on the floor, on nearly every seat, across tables - everywhere. It was an utterly disgusting display of disregard — for the staff working there and for the luxurious excess that prevails in our lives. It bothered me a lot. I’ve really never seen anything quite like it. As we literally stepped over piles of shoes and boxes littering the floor, I was amazed at how good natured and professional the staff at the store remained despite really crazy people all around. Thing 1 and I just watched for a bit — kind of like when you see an accident and can’t look away.
