Nov 23-25
Nov 23-24 Thanksgiving! We had a fantastic meal with family, old friends, and new friends. Smoked the turkey in the big green egg, and prepared a feast. It felt r-e-a-l-l-y good to cook for two days. Much needed centering. Loved how the colors of the meal really looked like the colors of fall: brown, orange, red, yellow.
Nov 25 Went to see A Christmas Story at Gerding Theatre last night. Really wonderful. Great set design, delightful acting, excellent staging. Ran into old friends sitting right next to us, too! Goldblatt’s scene remninded me of being about 4 and getting a key to go open these enormous doors at a department store in Cincinnatti. Like walking up to a glorious castle and gaining entrance to a treasure house. Scott swears it was Shillito’s, which no longer exists. It’s the kind of dreamy did-it-really-happen memory from childhood that is tied to the holidays. I loved that despite parts of the Pearl District becoming box stores - Anthropologie, West Elm, etc. - other parts are still about making: frame shop, brake repair (the tools!! LOVE!), and Utrecht art supplies. My kind of window shopping for the holidays — all about possibilities and working with hands. That said, I am an absolute sucker for the twinkly time of the year - crisp air, little white lights, people walking briskly and chattering on early evening streets, packages in hand, anticipation in the air. I blame all those years going into NYC when we lived in NJ (74-82). I still miss heading to Rockefeller Plaza (will always be that in my head) and walking down 5th Ave on the day after Christmas.
